1. Where do you live: in a house or in a flat?

I live in a spacious two-storey detached house, with a big garden.


2. What are the disadventages of living in a flat?

A block of flats is rather densely populated. Sometimes people don’t even knoww their next-door neigbours. But even if you don’t know them you can often hear as the walls are not completely sound-proof. The different pipes conduct the sound.

In a house there is more room and more privacy in a house you are on your own and noboc disturbs you. You can have a garden in which you can grow flowers or sit on the lawn. You children can also feel safer because they can play in the fenced-off yard and they dont havet go out to the huge and unfriendly playing fields.

Since land is becoming more and more expensive, it is cheaper to build high blocks of fun from prefabricated materials than to construct hundreds of small houses. The overheads are also lower if you live in a flat than if you live in a house.

If you look at our house from the outside, the front door is straight to the right. This open directly into a big room. This is the living room. There are doors on either side of the hall, leading two smaller rooms. These are the kitchen and one bedroom. There is no separate dining room. A door on the other side of the living room leads to the bathroom and a small room.


6. What type of accomodation is it?

It is freehold house so we don’t need to pay rent.


7. How is your living-room furnished?

As we enter the living room there is a fireplace opposite us. There is a three-piece sofa in the middle and a closet on the left. There is a small table next to the armchair.


8. What are the walls and the floor like?

There is wooden panel on the walls. The ceiling a painted pink. A thick, brown carpet covers the floor.


9. How big is your kitchen?

Our kitchen is of medium size but the space is used very efficiently.


10. How is it furnished?

There is a stove behind the door. Opposite him is the dining table and chairs. To the right is the kitchen cabinet and sink unit next to the wall.


11. What labour-saving devices have you got?

Our kitchen is almost fully fitted with labour saving devices; you can now find most of these in nearly all hungarian households. in the kitchen we have a cooker, a fridge, a toaster, a food processor, a dishwasher, a mincer, a blender, a micro-wave oven and a deep frier.


12. What things are there in your bathroom?

There is a shower behind the door. The washbasin is next to the shower and over the shower there is a mirror. The soap dish is on the hand basin.


13. How are the walls and the floor covered in the bathroom?

Both the floor and the walls are tiled to prevent the plaster from getting wet through the continual splashing which inevitably occurs when you wash.


14. What do you keep on the bathroom shelves?

On one of the bathroom shelves we have toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorants, sprays shampoo, bubble-bath, body lotion and a nail brush; and on the other, which is over the mirror, we have detergents, washing powder and furniture polish.


15. How is your bedroom furnished?

In our bedroom there is a double bed right next to the door. the bedside table, the wardrobe and the chest of drawers are put along the wall and the dressing table is opposite the bed. on the bed we have quilted bedspreads and the floor is covered with a wall-to-wall carpet. the roller blinds on the windows shut out the morning light.



16. Have you got an attic/ cellar/ balcony?

There is no attic and cellar but there is a large terrace next to the house.


17. What do you use them for?

On the terrace we have beautiful geraniums flowering from spring till late atumn. There are six chairs and a table still there.


18. What kinds of ornaments do you like?

I especially like hand-painted china figures and vases. i also have some wood carvings, ceramics and prints in the hall as well as two paintings in the living-room.


19. Have you got a smartphone / computer?

My parents and I also have our own smartphones. A smartphone is a very useful thing if you want to be reached wherever you are, or you want to check your e-mails or get connected to the internet. And I still have a laptop.


20. What kind of heating is there?

We heated with wood in a fireplace. This is a very good method.


21. How the other people heat their houses?ű

Quite a few people use convector heaters in Hungary and some families have electric heaters. Tile stoves and fireplaces have become popular recently because people like sitting by the blazing coal fire when it is cold and windy outside.


22. In what types of housing can people live?

People can live in skyscrapers, high-rise blocks, blocks of flats, terraced houses, semi-detached houses, detached houses, bungalows, huts, cottages. They can own their flats or they can rent a flat. they can share a flat with other families and live in a co-tenancy. some people live in lodgings.


23. What were the house rules?

You are not supposed to smoke in the common rooms, you are not allowed to be too noisy take girls or boys into your room, stick pictures on the wall and you have to use the bathroom at a fixed time.

If you have enough money you can buy a flat / house, build a house yourself or have a flat / house built. however, most people cannot afford this. if they don't want to rent a flat / house or live with their parents, they can get a loan from a bank.


25. How can you get the money for building a house or buying a flat?

Getting a loan is usually difficult, because most banks demand that you have some money in order to be entitled to a mortgage. once you get the loan, usually at a very high interest rate, you have to pay it back in monthly instalments for many years. if you have two or more children, you may get a state grant, which you do not have to pay back.
